7 Foods That Hurt Your Thyroid
Disorders of the thyroid gland are frequent but "hide" in unclear symptoms. The first thing is to go to the doctor; the second, take care of what you eat. Here are seven foods you should avoid if you want to keep your thyroid healthy:
1. Coffee
Drinking two cups a day brings you multiple benefits, including improving your circulation.
But if you have hypothyroidism (your thyroid is slow) and you are medicating, do not mix the drug with coffee because it prevents its absorption. Allow at least two hours to pass.
Nor should you mix if you usually take antacids or iron or calcium supplements.
2. Peanuts
Peanuts are one of the foods that possess goitrogens, substances that are naturally found in several foods and that interfere with the function of the thyroid gland. This means that they can prevent the thyroid from making the precise hormones.
What you must remember is that they have a gociogenic effect, like soy.
The problem is in the husk, so take them with caution and peel them.
3. Foods with gluten
Some studies have associated gluten and hypothyroidism.
If you have thyroid problems, decrease your gluten intake and choose cereals that do not contain this protein: rice (best whole grain), quinoa, corn…
4. Cabbages
Do not miss the cruciferous because they are a great food, but it is not appropriate is to eat them raw.
More and more people consume them uncooked because it satisfies them and their stomach assimilates them well. However, this type of vegetable contains compounds with a goitrogenic effect.
In case of hypothyroidism should be taken moderately and always cooked.
Applies the same recommendation with broccoli, Brussels sprouts…
5. Radishes
They are antioxidants and depuratives, but they do not suit you if you have hypothyroidism because they also contain goitrogens.
Instead you can consume fermented carrots or cook them to reduce their negative effect.
6. Yucca and sweet potato
They have substances that compete with iodine, essential for the function of the thyroid.
As a recommendation, yucca can be pureed and the sweet potato must be well cooked.
7. Liver
If you consume it very often, your alpha lipoic acid can interfere with drugs for hypothyroidism.
Therefore, our recommendation is to reduce your liver consumption.
The symptoms to watch for
A hoarseness that takes weeks-or even months-to disappear, feel very tired just wake up, notice that no diet (however healthy and balanced) makes you lose weight, never sweat, have a swollen face or suffer constipation can be warning signs that your thyroid gland (located in the neck) is working at a slow pace.
- Hypothyroidism, in all its versions, is very common nowadays and experts know that there are many more affected than those who have already been diagnosed.
- If you notice several of the symptoms that we mentioned at the beginning, go to your doctor and, as a precaution, take special care with the foods and habits that we explain in this article. The first food to reduce is soy. Its isoflavones prevent, especially after age 50, that your body manufacture thyroid hormones.
Keep in mind that many hypothyroidisms are detected after age 50: some symptoms are often mistaken for signs of menopause.
